MARCH FOR OUR LIVES

MARCH FOR OUR LIVES

First and foremost, it is worth noting that 40 000 people die every year, almost a 100 people a day because of gun violence epidemic in the USA which has increased immensely in the last decades becoming the second cause of unnatural death. As a reaction to the increasing number of school shootings and more generally of gun violence victims related to acts like suicides,  mass shootings, feminicides, police misconducts...the March For Our Lives (MFOL) movement has been created by the amercan youth after the Majority Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland to fight against the numerous consequences of this intolerable and unprecendet situation for a developed country. This movement points out that this violence is not acceptable not even in the name of an illusionary and contradictive societal belief that a gun can solve security problems or that after all guns are items of the american culture. Conversely this youth has comprehended that this violnce is due to hate, poverty and despair that cause so much harm to a nation. Therefore their aims are not only related to the fight against gun violence but also to the fight for societal rights that are lacking in the american law like racial justice, economic justice, immigrant rights, and the rights of their LGBTQ allies.

To fight against problems related

to gun violence, the movement intends to try to empower the youth all across the USA promoting gun violence preventions policies.
Accordingly to their will of change they organized the largest single day of demonstration against gun violence but they also are promoting new voting forms, registering voters against gun's ownership.
Additionally, we must remember that their aims cannot be reduced to a single election, but that precisely their aim is to fight against the gun lobbying and its influence in the political field. What's more, it points to a burning issue which is the illegitimate power of the National Riffle Association (N.R.A) has in the USA and what's more important is they are the ones that should answer to this national public health emergency and they aren't taking any responsability.

To fight against this unpatriotic gun lobby and gun industry accountable, the nation’s gun laws and illegal behavior they have created some mottos. The main one is REGISTER, EDUCATE, VOTE which shows the three ways to act against gun violence. The first one being taking part in the movement, the second would be raising awareness and the third voting for parties that are against gun belonging and independent from the gun lobby. The other motto would be C.H.A.N.G.E which would be a summary of their plan to reduce gun violence, the Peace Plan.

MARCH 24th - image at the top of the blogpost

In this colored picture we see Emma Gozález with other very known representatives of the movement crying and supporting each other on a tase during the demonstration of March 24th of the MFOL rally in Washington D.C.
They seem affected but also hopeful because they are yelling and raising their arms in sign of protest.

As an illustration of this movement I choose this picture.

Firstly because it shows the suffering and the pain of this youth that is facing premature deaths of family members due to gun violence.

All in all it would seem that they are defeated but conversely this picture shows precisely that it isn't the case. That they are strong and the have the zeal to achieve their aims, to make justice raising their voices for change.

Last but not least, this image shows also the diversity of origins, ages, genders and sexual orientations participating in this movement.

To put it in a nutshell, I would say that the suffering the pain but also the power, the will, the love, the empathy and the unity of this youth is the basis of this movement and of change.
