EMPIRE

EMPIRE Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri are two philosophers that have written together the book "Empire" in 2000, in this same book they stated these sentences:   “The United States does not, and indeed no nation-state can today, form the center of an imperialist project. Imperialism is over. No nation will be world leader in the way modern European nations were.”  I though this would be an interesting subject related to international relations, globalization and imperialism.  Hence this allegation leads us to question the world as we conceive it nowadays. More specifically the question aroused by the authors is :  "Although the great colonial empires have collapsed during the past half century, their legacy shape almost every aspect of life on a global scale. (...) Meanwhile there are fierce arguments about what have replaced these empires. Do the United States (...) and the transnational companies constitute a new imperial sys

The Coming Greater Depression of the 2020s

ARTICLE : THE COMING DEPRESSION OF THE 2020s LINK OF THE ARTICLE :  https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/greater-depression-covid19-headwinds-by-nouriel-roubini-2020-04 I choose an   opinion article published the 28th of April 2020 by Project Syndicate "The World's opinion page". It was written by  Nouriel Roubini, Professor of Economics at New York University's Stern School of Business .   First and foremost , the purpose of the article is to propound a rather more detailed hypothesis or analysis of the economical consequences that the current health crisis is about to bring. As we all know the spread of the coronavirus in the entire world, has caused almost a worldwide recession of all non activities. As a consequence, the economic activity has known a big  downturn since the beginning of the quarantines although telecommuting has been a convenient solution for some lines of business. Additionally, in this article, Nouriel Roubini explains that this c

10 words to understand better the COVID-19 pandemic

10 WORDS RELATED TOTHE COVID-19 AND THEIR DEFINITIONS  If I understood well the purpose of this article, I think that our task was to choose 10 words out of the glossary that they offered. And hence we would be able to have a full comprehension of the news information about the current pandemic called COVID-19. Therefore I thought that it would be more logical to choose the words that I didn't know before reading this article.  WORD 1 :   furlough As I said I didn't know what this word meant but it happened to be a temporary layoff from work . So just as telecommuting, these are words that were not very usual, but since multiple governments decided to close all non-essential businesses and banned any non-necessary activity, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, a lot of workers have been furloughed.  WORD 2 :  herd immunity Herd immunity   is the immunity or resistance to a particular infection that occurs in a group of people or animals when

EXCHANGES IN REAL SPACES AND VIRTUAL SPACES

EXCHANGES IN REAL SPACES AND VIRTUAL SPACES In the context of our modern world  and the birth of our new ultra connected generation Z, the frontier between real and virtual spaces is becoming less noticeable. It is a well known fact that our exposure to screens increases through time, since a major part of our activities are now available on the Internet. Also, our activities have changed since the technological revolution.  The point at issue sets the following question :    How far is the boundary between real and virtual spaces  becoming increasingly blurred nowadays? This is the case in point in Mark Dubovsky's cartoon "Working from home" and Harvey Schwadron's cartoon "Ace Computers".  DOCUMENT 1 : WORKING FROM HOME ; MARK DUBOVSKY  1) DESCRIPTION At the first look, we see in the foreground two working desks side by side. Likewise, they are both empty, no paper is laying on them and also no one sitting on the chairs. Actu

Mind-Map spaces and exchanges

PARAGRAPH ONE  In this notion we have to deal with two different concepts « spaces » and « exchanges ». If we dig into these two concepts and search a definition to them we could say that : If we look up in a dictionary we would find this definition an empty area that is free to be used , but if we dig a little bit more in what it could men, we could say that this concept reflects not only a geographical and physical area but also a symbolical or even virtual area if we look at our modern world. All things considered we could say that a « space » whatever the shape it takes (if it takes one) gives place to actions to be developed in it.  But if we look at our other concept which is « exchanges » the official definition would be this one the giving and taking of one thing for another, so an exchange would be like an interaction that can take many different forms and can happen between different beings, places …  At the end of the day we could link these two concept

ELEPHANT, a GUS VAN SANT movie

Image
ELEPHANT, a GUS VAN SANT movie  1) What struck you most in the film? To begin with, I would like to emphasize the fact that this question is particularly difficult to answer when it comes to the analysis of this movie. Even if I have mixed feelings in the choice I have made, it goes without saying that this particular scene is quite striking. In the first place, this moment struck me because it is the actual accomplishment of their shooting plan. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that the artistic choice of Gus Van Sant decelerate the arrival of the shooters and that the different time lapses and point of views create a shroud of confusion. Strange as it may seam in this scene all seems to be clarified. But, what strikes me the most in this scene is that Michelle is the first victim. This, in fact, seems very paradoxical because she could be considered as a "nerd". On top of that, she is very lonely and she is also harassed and humiliated by other students. O
